We came for the pancakes! And also got the poutine which was soo yummy. Ok, pancakes ranked (1 - best, 6 - hell no):
#1. Cinnamon, 2. Butterscotch chip 3. Mac n cheese 4. White chocolate chip 5. Pecan 6. Dulce Leche
Wished I tried more. But really, I came for the mac n cheese pancakes. They’re not super cheesy AT ALL. In fact it’s very subtle until you get to the middle of the pancakes. I can see myself snacking on one as a treat but probably won’t order it for a meal again. It’s worth trying though! And it does taste good. The raspberry iced tea wasn’t sweetened, which worked out in the end with all those pancakes!
I’d you’re dining in, it’s a small space so you might need to a wait on line a little. The staff is super sweet.
Loved the documentary, and a big fan in general. Got to try this place out for the first time and it was a great experience and food was excellent! Zach is a cool dude too!
What a find! Tucked away in Essex Market is one of the best breakfasts in NYC! I went with 3 friends on a Friday morning and luckily there was an open table. Best OJ! Just get it. We had the Ova and the So Good (if you love cheese, this is for you), coconut rice, cinnamon, blueberry, and mac and cheese pancakes. So many fun options on the menu. Can't wait to go back.
Note that Shopsin's uses peanut oil extensively in the kitchen. If you or someone in your party has an allergy, do not eat here, as you'd be limited to the coffee and yogurt.
Shopsin's is greasy spoon diner food, with hundreds of options, including several ridiculous sounding combinations of heart attack fuel that tastes like butter and sausage and eggs on steroids. The pancakes are excellent, the hash is phenomenal crunchy potato goodness, the sandwiches hefty. This is one of those places where it would take you a year to try the whole menu. Pricing is fair for the neighborhood and target market, at $15-20 per entree.
Service is kind and knowledgeable about the menu. However at peak times, it will be a little slow. There are colored pencils and play paper placemats for kids. You serve yourself water and coffee. The wait was a bit longer than I liked to get our dishes, but everything was hot.
Seating here is limited, and you may have to take out and take your food to another part of Essex Market Line to sit.
Probably my favorite pancakes in all of nyc. Cute little spot tucked inside the Essex market. No reservations here - you have to stand in line to wait for a table. It’s my go to place for brunch in the winter as their line is indoors. Their menu is insanely long, so while you’re likely waiting in line to be seated, you can browse (and be overwhelmed) by their extensive menu. Be prepared for a slower meal as the kitchen is seriously tiny - they bring your food out as it’s ready (one by one). Come with a smaller group to be seated faster, there’s only about 10 tables plus a few bar seats. It’s chill and laid back, just don’t try and bring your to-go iced lattes in here, they really don’t like that.
You *must* order a mac and cheese pancake as a side dish. Mix the maple syrup and hot sauce together and dip. You will not regret it.
Absolutely terrible experience with one of the staff members. We never even ate or sat down we came inn specifically to eat there as per recommendations and the pictures we see every time we pass Essex market. Well we walk in and are greeted with if you want to sit down you can't bring that outside drink in her(coffee we just got from another kiosk) when we ask why as at least give us a reason she would not then we asked again and she said "what do you not get I don't understand" Thanks for the no explanation and unwarranted attitude needless to say we will never step foot in there again as long as the women behind the counter works there. Sad because the food actually looked great!
This place defies all logic and common sense. Came with a party of 5 and saw a sign where they do not seat parties larger than 4. Sure, no problem - it’s a small kitchen. Easy solution, we split up into a group of 3 + 2. There’s no need for us to sit next to each other. To our astonishment, that is not allowed…
Oh by the way, there was no line behind us.
Staff was overall extremely rude, and my brain is still trying to make sense of their logic.
